Monterey to Big Sur, California Monhegan Island, Maine
Driving along Highway 1, natural landscapes fill a 360 degree panorama. These views lure you to leave the road and explore beaches, forests, and towns along the way. About 10 miles off the mainland, near Rockland, Monhegan is home to about 70 permanent residents. The community is comprised largely of two groups. There are the lobstermen, who, as part of a conservation effort with a neighboring island, cast their traps only during the winter. In addition, there are the artists, mainly painters, who use the pure light, pristine natural landscape, and peaceful solitude, as a creative muse.
